Do you need a certification to get a CNC machinist or welding job?
By Sauban Bhura, founder of Melben. Updated September 22, 2026
Short answer
Usually not. Of 50 CNC machinist job orders Melben received from employers between July and September 2026, only 2 asked about a certificate or apprenticeship, and one accepted 5 years of experience instead. Of 20 welding job orders, 4 asked about certifications such as AWS. Employers mostly screen for hands-on experience you can describe.
What the job orders asked for
| Trade | Job orders | Asked about a certificate |
|---|---|---|
| CNC machinist | 50 | 2 |
| Welder / fabricator | 20 | 4 |
For welders, certification usually came up as a question ("Have you passed welding certification tests? Which ones?"), not a hard requirement. One employer said outright that it wanted a real job behind the claim, not a certificate or a course.
What employers screen for instead
For CNC jobs: which machines and controls you have run, whether you do your own setups, whether you can edit or write programs, what tolerances you hold, and whether you can read a print and measure with micrometers and calipers.
For welding jobs: which processes (MIG, TIG, stick, flux core), which materials (mild steel, stainless, aluminum), what thickness, and whether you can read prints and weld symbols and fit your own work. A weld test at the interview is common.
When a certificate does help
If you are new and have no work history, a community college or trade school program gives an employer something to go on. Some structural, pipe, and code work requires a current weld certification by law or by contract. Beyond that, experience you can describe in detail beats a certificate.
Pay figures are the hourly ranges employers set on job orders they gave Melben between July 15 to September 22, 2026. "Median" is the middle of each job's range, then the middle of those. Salary sites average what people report; these are what employers were offering.
Common questions
- Do I need AWS certification to get a welding job?
- For most shop and production jobs, no. In our 2026 data 4 of 20 welding job orders asked about certifications, usually as a question rather than a requirement. Structural, pipe, and code work is where certification is more often required.
- Can I become a CNC machinist without going to school?
- Yes. Many machinists start as operators and learn setups on the job. Only 2 of 50 CNC job orders in our 2026 data asked about a certificate or apprenticeship, and one of those accepted equivalent experience instead.
