CNC operator vs machinist vs programmer: who gets paid more?

By Sauban Bhura, founder of Melben. Updated September 22, 2026

Short answer

CNC programmers ($28 an hour) and machinists ($27.50) are offered more than operators ($23.50), going by the median offer in 50 CNC job orders Melben received from employers between July and September 2026. Setup machinists ($30.75) and shift leads ($39) were offered the most. Jobs open to both mills and lathes paid more than mill-only or lathe-only jobs.

Pay by role

Role (by job title)JobsMedian offerRange
CNC operator5$23.50$15 to $40
CNC machinist32$27.50$17 to $45
CNC programmer7$28.00$16 to $35
Setup machinist2$30.75$26 to $35
Lead or supervisor2$39.00$35 to $44

Roles with only two jobs are a rough guide, not a rule.

How the three roles differ

An operator loads parts, runs the cycle, checks parts with gauges, and calls someone when something goes wrong. A machinist also sets up the job: loads tools and fixtures, touches off offsets, proves out the first part, and fixes problems. A programmer writes the program, at the control or in CAM software like Mastercam, and picks the tooling.

The biggest single jump is from operator to machinist, and it comes from doing your own setups. Many shops will train an operator who shows they want to learn setups.

Mill vs lathe: which pays more?

MachinesJobsMedian offer
Mills and lathes33$28.00
Mills only7$26.00
Lathes only4$24.50

Being able to run both is worth about $2 an hour at the median. Most shops we recruit for want someone who can move between the two.

Pay figures are the hourly ranges employers set on job orders they gave Melben between July 15 to September 22, 2026. "Median" is the middle of each job's range, then the middle of those. Salary sites average what people report; these are what employers were offering.

Common questions

How do I go from CNC operator to machinist?
Learn setups. Ask to shadow setups, learn to touch off tools and set work offsets, and learn to read prints and use micrometers. Doing your own setups is the skill employers pay the machinist rate for.
Do CNC programmers make more than machinists?
A little, in our 2026 data: $28 an hour median for programmers against $27.50 for machinists. Machinists who both set up and program their own jobs were among the best paid.
